Join me on at hike at one of the most historically rich natural areas in the region, the Highland Trails in Charlottesville. These trails wind through land with a complex history; once part of the estate of James Monroe, fifth U.S. president, whose household was sustained by the labor of enslaved people. We hike here with that history in mind, honoring the full story of this land as we enjoy its natural beauty.

We’ll be hiking the Mountain Loop (Red Trail) — 3.4 miles with 584 feet of elevation gain through forested hillsides adjacent to Carters Mountain Orchard. It’s a slightly gentler outing than our Fortune’s Cove hike, but no less rewarding, with lovely woodland scenery and the charm of hiking on historic grounds.

What to expect:
A winding loop through mixed forest with moderate climbs. Early April in the Blue Ridge foothills means spring will be in full swing; expect budding trees, and fresh green views.

What to bring:
Hiking boots, layers (April mornings can be cool!), water, and a snack. Trekking poles welcome.

Pace: Moderate, social pace and welcoming to all experience levels.

Parking: Meet at the Highland Trails parking area near James Monroe’s Highland. This is about an hour and 10 minute drive from Richmond.

After the hike we can relax with a flight and snacks (or pack your lunch to eat) at Jefferson Vineyards.
