Force Lake is an under-appreciated large pond or small lake that abuts the Heron Lakes Golf Course. Many decades ago it was a popular swimming hole of Vanport City residents. Later it became polluted, but starting in 2009 locals teamed up to relieve it of its tires and shopping carts, and now it’s a place to raise your binoculars for a surprisingly long list of birds.

In spring through summer the nearby woods teem with warblers, vireos, orioles and grosbeaks. Shorebirds come in when the water drops in late summer. And at this time of year a wide range of waterfowl may be found in the main pond, with recent lists showing Lesser and Greater Scaup, Bufflehead, and Canvasback.

Usually mornings are the best time to go birding, but in Portland’s cooler months afternoons can also be good. So let’s try an afternoon outing this Saturday!

Please note that while there is a bathroom, it’s a bit of a trek to the clubhouse.
