Summer Camping at Southern Plains Land Trust

You asked for it, and we made it happen.

For the last couple of years, Birding & Beers members have been supporting the preservation work of Southern Plains Land Trust (SPLT). With multiple preserves in southeastern Colorado, SPLT is protecting prairie habitat in perpetuity through strategic land acquisition efforts. And their success shows—bison herds and pronghorn are roaming again, black-footed ferrets are reproducing, mountain plovers and burrowing owls are nesting, badgers and coyotes are hunting together, and so much more.

SPLT preserves are not open to the public. Unless you volunteer on a workday or secure a spot on one of the very limited guided tours offered by Reefs to Rockies, there is no access. That’s why this trip is such a rare privilege—thanks to our group’s ongoing support of SPLT, I was able to secure special permission for Birding & Beers to camp overnight on the preserve. This is an exclusive opportunity that simply isn’t available to the general public.

Exact location will be provided closer to the event. For planning purposes, it's about 45 minutes south of Lamar.

This fundraiser event has the goal of raising $1,000—enough to help purchase and protect two more acres of prairie habitat. Participation is limited to just 20 people. Campers will enjoy two guided nature walks, a wildlife drive, and a special nocturnal experience you won’t find anywhere else.
