Bring on the Bighorns, Birding, and Beers!
Details
November is prime time for bighorn sheep battles in Waterton Canyon! During rut season, powerful rams face off in dramatic displays of dominance — butting heads, bounding up cliffs, and battling for the attention of nearby ewes. With a resident herd of 70–90 sheep and rugged canyon walls that create perfect viewing perches, Waterton is one of the best places in Colorado to witness this wild spectacle.
The trail through the canyon is wide and mostly flat — expect to walk up to two miles each way as we bird, breathe in the brisk fall air, and keep our eyes peeled for movement on the cliffs. While sightings aren’t guaranteed (the herd sometimes wanders deeper into the canyon), we’ll spend 2.5–3 hours exploring before heading to Lariat Lodge Brewing Company to celebrate the day.
Plan for the weather!
We'll meet at the parking lot on the east side of Waterton Rd. There's a gathering spot near the bathrooms.
Birds, bighorns, and brews — now that’s a November to remember!
