Count the birds in the Hour of the Garden Birds 11 May 2024!

Details

Let's take part in the Hour of the Garden Birds 8-12 May 2024!
Read the description below.

We will meet at Emma's Bakery to grab a coffee and then walk to Irchel Park, where we will spread out and count the birds for 1 hour. The earlier we start the better:)

After 1 hour we can meet again to share our observations. We will decide on the spot.

What to bring:
Bring your binoculars and something to sit on.
(In case of very bad weather we may have to postpone to Sunday 12 May).

Description of this action from the BridLife website:
Which birds breed around your house? BirdLife Switzerland's next "Garden Bird Hour" will take place from 8 to 12 May 2024. Young and old are invited to spend an hour counting and reporting the birds in their garden, balcony or park.
Switzerland's largest citizen science project confirmed this when it was last carried out in May 2023: Urban areas can be an important habitat for birds if gardens and other green spaces are designed in a diverse way. A total of 106,153 birds of 168 species were reported (for analysis).

Counting method
How to participate in the Garden Bird Hour

1. observe and count
Sit in your garden, on your balcony or in a nearby park (not in the forest) for one hour on the days of the Garden Bird Hour and observe and count the birds. The campaign flyer can be used as an aid to counting.

2. make correct notes
Avoid double counting. For each species, record the highest number of individuals observed at the same time.
For example: If you see a sparrow twice and three sparrows together once, you can report three sparrows. If you see a male blackbird and later a female blackbird, you can record both.

3. report
Simply report your observations using the report form
You can use the PDF form available here:
https://www.birdlife.ch/sites/default/files/documents/SdG_Faltblatt_2024.pdf
You can also report using the "BirdLife Switzerland bird guide" app.
