Containers, Containers , Containers

Welcome to our first meetup of 2019 which will be focused on containers. We're still finalising the lineup, but as usual it'll be an interesting evening of Tech Talk, Demos and Networking, with a few drinks and nibbles to boot ๐Ÿ˜

As usual the event will take place at The Old Joint Stock (http://www.oldjointstock.co.uk/) in Birmingham, starting at 18:00. We've booked the larger Theatre so there is plenty of space to bring your colleagues along.

More detail on the Agenda will follow soon, but for now SIGNUP!

17:30-18:00 - Meet & Greet

18:00 - Steve Waterworth - Monitoring Containerised Micro services

Modern containerised micro service applications present a tough challenge to monitoring. There is too much data to comprehend coming from an environment that is constantly changing. I will explore why traditional monitoring techniques are not longer relevant and present possible alternative approaches to solve the monitoring paradox.

Steve is the Technical Marketing Manager at Instana, helping to transform Application Performance Management (APM) with AI powered automation. He brings plenty of experience to this role having worked in technical roles in the APM space since 2004 for companies including Wily Technology and AppDynamics. In that time he has seen numerous technical revolutions and market disruptions giving him unique insight into the rapidly changing DevOps environment. He has a background in electronics and programming before moving to software solutions.

18:30 - Matt Todd - Building a Cloud Containerised Test Lab

This talk aims to demonstrate how Docker Swarm can be used to seamlessly extend local environments to produce powerful distributed computing test labs. It will explain how in combination with a simple set of tools and configurations a cloud based CAAS platform can be created, manipulated and subsequently conveniently disposed. It will walk through a simple use case for evaluating the effect of networking partitions on a clustered middleware service.

Matt is the Chief Architect at BlackCat Technology Solutions, an agile software delivery consultancy based in Birmingham UK. He works with enterprise customers to provide coherent process and technical strategies which ensure maximum client business value can be realised. He runs the Docker Birmingham UK group and loves helping others to understand technology from both technical and strategic perspectives.

19:00 - Break - Food & Drink

19:20 - Dan Sheldon & Iwan Bedford - Kubernetes and Helm - the package manager for kubernetes

The runaway success of Kubernetes has created an ecosystem of tools to simplify the complexity of application development and deployment. Helm is a popular application package manager running atop Kubernetes. While the problem of managing applications on Kubernetes can be complex, Helm itself is quite simple to use. We will run through the use of helm-charts and managing it with simple commands.

Dan is a Platform Engineer at Capgemini focusing on Cloud Infrastructure, with experience of implementing highly available tools & services across both public & private sector accounts using cutting edge technologies such as Kubernetes & Docker. He also has previous experience in the Cyber Security space developing robust Identity platforms to better protect micro-services.

Iwan is an experienced DevOps engineer with a demonstrated history of working in the IT and Communications industry. Highly skilled in DevOps toolsets including automation, infrastructure as code and cloud based infrastructure.

20:00 - Close & Networking.
