Code Workshop with BitPay
Details
Local Atlanta Bitcoin company BitPay (http://bitpay.com) (http://bitpay.com)will lead a code workshop where you’ll learn how to write code that can interface with the Bitcoin network. We’ll learn how to send and receive money and explore the blockchain programmatically in JavaScript using Bitcore (http://bitcore.io)--BitPay’s set of open source tools that make it easy to interact with Bitcoin in code.
After this primer, you’ll have a much more concrete idea of how Bitcoin works, and also a good footing to start making your own Bitcoin applications. These could include a new wallet, an app for accepting bitcoin payments, or a way to programmatically analyze transactions on the blockchain--Bitcoin’s public ledger.
The event will be about 2 hours long. There will be several BitPay employees as well as volunteers from the meetup group to help everyone out.
To ensure we have enough help and seats, etc, we’re going to limit attendance. Please keep your RSVP updated so others can come if you cannot.
Prereqs
This workshop is for beginners, but the following prerequisites are recommended. If you’re more advanced, this is a great opportunity to ask questions to BitPay experts!
• Some familiarity with Bitcoin. It’s OK if you’ve never actually sent or received any bitcoin.
• Some experience with Javascript.
Setup
All you'll need for the workshop is a laptop with a text editor and any version of Node.js (v0.10, v0.12 or v4.2). The best way to install Node.js is to use NVM (Node Version Manager). You can find instructions on installing NVM here: https://github.com/creationix/nvm
If you would like to run a Bitcoin block explorer locally for the workshop (this is optional), please see the detailed guide at:
https://bitcore.io/guides/full-node
. It can take around 24 hours to download the blockchain and sync with the Bitcoin livenet and several hours to sync with the Bitcoin testnet.
Parking!
Please allow for an additional 10 minutes to park and walk to the Physics Building. See the map below for parking deck and building location.
Our recommended place to park is W02, Student Center Deck. It's often free after hours.
