The Mercatus Center at George Mason University’s 2026 Alexis de Tocqueville Fellowship: Exploring the Intersection of Bitcoin, Political Economy, and Philosophy brings together members of the Bitcoin community as well as scholars and graduate students conducting research on Bitcoin to examine the classical liberal foundations and possibilities of Bitcoin, particularly through the principles of liberty and subsidiarity.
The program is sponsored by Texas Bitcoin and Grid Alliance and in partnership with Bitcoin Park.
Details:
The 4-month fellowship will take place in February 2026, beginning with a 2-day colloquium in Austin, Texas, and followed by a series of online discussions. Books, travel and lodging to the colloquium will be covered by the program. The curriculum will include works by F. A. Hayek, Adam Smith, Alexis de Tocqueville, and Lawrence H. White, as well as important essays on Bitcoin. Fellows will get connected to one another, scholars in political economy and monetary policy (including Larry White, Peter Boettke, and David Beckworth, the host of the Macro Musings Podcast), and a vibrant alumni network.
We invite members of the Bitcoin community and scholars and graduate students exploring Bitcoin in their research to submit a short application expressing their interest in the program. Applications are due December 20, 2025.
Offers to the fellowship, and invitations to the initial colloquium, will be announced in early January 2026.
