Details

Configuring the layered cake of Hadoop

Apache Hadoop is an open source distributed systems framework. It enables resilient computation on very large data sets by replicating and distributing data across a multitude of hosts and moving the computation to where the data is and aggregating the results. Hadoop runs as a layered set of services running on top of an ensemble of machines. In this presentation, Ian Kallen will talk about the services in the Hadoop stack, how they depend on each other and how they can be configured to compute across hundreds of hosts and many petabytes of data

Bio:

Ian Kallen is an engineering leader at Bitnami. Ian has many years of experience in technology leadership roles with Lithium Technologies, Klout, Technorati and other Silicon Valley startups. Beyond agile software development and devops, his responsibilities have included operating large distributed systems deployments including HBase, Hadoop and ElasticSearch.

Scaling remote engineering teams

Expanding an engineering team these days is a challenge. Many managers are looking to expand their teams, but finding co-located talent can be challenging, especially in some hot markets.

A modern high tech work force is distributed globally, not based on one office. With good people management practices, you will get better engineering and a happier, more dedicated team. Explore alternatives and best practices for expanding your team with talented REMOTE engineers with Rick Spencer, currently VP of Engineering for Ubuntu, but soon to be VP of Engineering at Bitnami.

Bio:

Rick Spencer is passionate about leading teams in the creation of amazing software by creating clarity of vision, passion for quality, and user-centered decision making to both small and large software development teams.

Rick has almost two decades of experience in software development, with a special focus on developer tools and experiences. He most recently worked on the Ubuntu project, leading the devices divison at Canonical. He is excited to be joining Bitnami as VP of Engineering in a few weeks.
