🤖 BkkSci Social: The Future of Android
Details
As Bangkok's community for science and technology enthusiasts, we've watched the digital landscape evolve—but lately, a significant policy change is reshaping how we think about software and security.
This month, we're doing things differently. There's no formal keynote speaker. Instead, we're hosting a BkkSci Social—a dedicated space to mingle, grab a drink, and dive deep into an emerging tech policy question.
📱 The Hot Topic: The Future of Android
In September 2026, Google will introduce new requirements that fundamentally change how apps reach Android users. Developers will need to verify their identity and register their applications with Google. As a result, users will no longer be able to trivially install an APK file from a friend, a website, or an alternative app store like F-Droid—the installation process will be restricted to verified apps from registered developers.
This represents a fundamental shift in what Android has historically been: a platform where users had the freedom to install software from any source.
Different stakeholders see this differently. Google frames it as a security measure. Organizations like F-Droid, the Electronic Frontier Foundation, and the Tor Project raise questions about user choice and developer privacy. The conversation is happening globally, and there are legitimate points on multiple sides.
