"Informal Architecture in South East Asian Cities"

Details

Urban centers in developing countries are generally covered by an amalgamation of informal structures, cages and illegal building extensions.

What are the legal implications of such structures? What standards should architects and planners adopt in regard to issues such as fire safety, heritage preservation and aesthetic value? Should their design priorities respond to subsistence needs or are there any cultural factors that should drive the planning process or dictate specific standards? Does illegal architecture signal the failure of commercial developers to deliver comfortable habitats adapted to tropical climates?

Over the past two and a half years, Paco Garcia has researched the emergence of informal architecture in a number of cities in South East Asia with the aim of building a regional-wide understanding of the forces behind these construction practices.

About Paco Garcia:

"Paco Garcia Moro was born in Spain and is an US accredited architect. He was awarded the David Del Val Foundation Grant in 2008, the EMECW scholarship by the European Commission in 2010 and the Design Trust Hong Kong Seed Grant in 2018.

Paco has been lecturer at the universities of Chulalongkorn and Thammasat Bangkok, where he has lived for past 5 years. His is now pursuing his doctoral degree at the Technical University of Valencia."
