Environmental Fiction

Details
This generative writing workshop focuses on speculative fiction through an environmental lens. We will read excerpts from myths from all over the world alongside contemporary science fiction and look at the ways the climate and ecosystem play a role in the story's unfolding. What obstacles does the environment provide? What lessons does it teach? And how is it portrayed, as background, character, or something more?
The workshop will also encourage participants to reflect on their own interactions with nature and bring those experience into their writing. Starting with readings and discussions, we will move through several short writing prompts and end with a longer one.
At the end of the session participants will be invited to share their work. Meet us in Brooklyn's Central Library in the Information Commons. We look forward to seeing you there!
Oreades Press is a publishing and social art project based in New York and Boston and founded by Irene Lee and Rachel TonThat. Our goal is to promote environmental storytelling and encourage people to form deeper connections with the natural world.
The workshop is now virtual and in person!
All attendants will receive an email with a link to attend virtually.
