Connect with the rich cultural heritage of Africa in this traditional West African Dance workshop!

Join BFTLDN for dynamic and engaging African Dance Fundamentals workshop hosted at the IREI! Dance Theatre and embark on a journey of rhythm, history, and self-discovery!
This special class is deisgned to help you meet a community of black women and build confidence through dance!

  • Master the Basics: Learn the foundational steps and rhythm patterns of various African dance styles. We'll break down the movements, making them accessible and fun for all levels, from absolute beginners to those with some dance experience.
  • Delve into History & Symbolism: Discover the fascinating stories and cultural significance behind the dances. Understand the historical influences that shaped these vibrant art forms and the rich symbolism embedded within each movement.
  • Fun & Supportive Environment: This class is designed to be energetic, inclusive, and pressure-free. Learn at your own pace, connect with fellow dancers, and build confidence as you explore new movements.
  • More Than Just Dance: This workshop is more than just learning steps. It's an opportunity to connect with your body, express yourself creatively, and experience the joy and energy of African dance.

No prior dance experience is necessary!

Meet your teacher: Nii Kwartey Owoo
Nii Kwartey Owoo is a dynamic force in African dance and music, deeply rooted in his Ghanaian heritage. A percussionist, dancer, choreographer, and educator, he fuses traditional West African rhythms with contemporary expressions, creating powerful performances that celebrate African culture. His work often incorporates intricate movements, footwork, and gestures that tell stories of spirituality, history, and identity.​
