Discussion: "Queenie" by Candice Carty William

Details

Hey Book Lovers!!

I hope this email finds you all doing fantastic and ready for another riveting read, albeit a bit lighter than our March selection. 📚✨ Our pick for May's meeting is Candice Carty William's debut novel "Queenie". And I'm thrilled to share that Marcus Books is offering a 10% discount on this book for Black Feminist Book Club members! (Big thanks to Ms. Blanche Richardson!)

Queenie chronicles the winding journey of a 20-something Jamaican British woman on her path to self-discovery. It has graced both NPR and TIME’s Best Books of the Year lists. Simultaneously described as "smart and breezy” as well as "astutely political, an essential commentary on everyday racism" by reviewers, I hope this will be a fun read for us to chat about.

Mark your calendars for May 18th, and stay tuned for the location. I’m hopeful the weather will offer us a chance to meet lakeside, but will confirm closer to the day. See you all soon!

P.S. If you do stop by Marcus Books for the discount, be sure to tell them the Black Feminist Book Club sent you.

Book Description:
Queenie Jenkins is a twenty-five-year-old Jamaican British woman living in London, straddling two cultures and slotting neatly into neither. She works at a national newspaper, where she’s constantly forced to compare herself to her white middle class peers. After a messy break up from her long-term white boyfriend, Queenie seeks comfort in all the wrong places…including several hazardous men who do a good job of occupying brain space and a bad job of affirming self-worth.

As Queenie careens from one questionable decision to another, she finds herself wondering, “What are you doing? Why are you doing it? Who do you want to be?”—all of the questions today’s woman must face in a world trying to answer them for her.
