Join us for a day of Queer African art and culture at Sisters in Cinema for a screening of Ghanaian filmmaker Joewackle J. Kusi's magical realist short, Nyame Mma (Children of God).

The film follows Kwamena, a 30-year-old queer man reckoning with the familial and social pressures of global queerphobia. After the sudden death of his father, he returns home and encounters a surreal dream in which he must face his father in the afterlife.

Nyame Mma was released shortly after the passage of reinforced legislation criminalizing LGBTQ+ Ghanaians. We’re using this occasion to support Drama Queens Ghana, a feminist, Pan-African, and youth-led theatre collective supporting queer resistance in Accra.

Drama Queens uses various forms of performance and audio-visual art to challenge the status quo, break barriers, and center the stories of women. Their work centers Pan-Africanist & decolonial feminist values that interrupting the social catalysts of rape culture, providing consent education, and resourcing queer liberation in Africa.

Tickets are live on Posh! Select a seat in one of three showings (2:30, 3:30, + 4:30pm). Please reach out to secure ADA seating.

Stick around after our first showing for a talkback with the filmmaker. Following the second showing, we’ll engage in guided discussion, and close after the third with a word from our beneficiary. We will also have a pop-up archive curated by Okrika, light bites by Alaase, and drinks sponsored by Ruby Hibiscus Tea.

See you at the movies 🎥🍿
