Haben: The Deafblind Woman Who Conquered Harvard Law
Ava Rosteria, 4655 SW Hall Street, Beaverton, OR, USJoin us this February as we dive into the extraordinary memoir of Haben Girma. As the first deafblind graduate of Harvard Law School, Haben’s story is a masterclass in resilience, innovation, and the fight for inclusion.
Named a "White House Champion of Change" by President Obama, Haben takes us on a journey from her childhood as the daughter of Eritrean refugees to the halls of one of the world’s most prestigious law schools. This isn't just a story about disability; it’s a story about breaking barriers and redefining what is possible.I really encourage everyone before the event or reading the book to check out her Tedx Talk on Youtube: Why I work to remove access barriers for students with disabilities | Haben Girma | TEDxBaltimore
To get the gears turning, we’ll be chatting about:
- Innovation through Disability: How Haben uses technology to bridge the gap between her world and others.
- Intersectional Identity: Navigating the world as a Black woman, a child of refugees, and a person with disabilities.
- The "Inspiration" Trap: Discussing Haben’s perspective on being called "inspiring" versus being given "access."
