What we’re about
BN is a 501c3 nonprofit organization. Headquartered in the Atlanta area, we provide an informative, caring, festive and friendly community. We connect with other Blacks (and allies) who are living free of religion and irrational beliefs who might otherwise be shunned by family and friends. Instead of accepting dogma, we determine truth and morality through reason and evidence.
Mission Statement
The mission of Black Nonbelievers is to:
• Provide secular fellowship.
• Nurture and support nonbelievers in "coming out" (ie, open identification).
• Encourage pride in nonreligious identities.
• Educate the public on the history and current state of nonbelief in the Black community.
• Organize events and charitable causes.
Meetings
BN activities include: general meetings, support meetings, service projects, event tabling, participation in research studies, media interviews, social outings, and annual holiday celebrations.
BN welcomes all regardless of sex, sexuality, gender identity, age, national origin, or race. However, in providing a safe space for Blacks who are atheist or questioning, we do ask that non-Blacks who participate offer a supportive role and try not to dominate or center themselves in any way.

See all- Secular Week of Action: Volunteering at Coan Garden.Edgewood Garden, Atlanta, GA
Please join us as we participate in the 2025 Secular Week of Action!
The Secular Week of Action (SWoA) unites compassionate communities to organize service events based on shared values, connect volunteers to impactful projects in their neighborhoods and online, and celebrate what we can achieve together. For ten days each year—encompassing the National Day of Reason on May 4th and the National Day of Prayer on the first Thursday of May—the secular movement rallies together to organize and join inclusive responses that address social problems and promote the welfare of humankind.
This year in Atlanta, BN will be volunteering with the Wylde Center at the Coan Garden. Coan Garden's mission is to provide raised beds for the families in the Edgewood neighborhood to grow their own vegetables, herbs, and flowers.

Please join us for an open and honest conversation about what it means to deconstruct from religion while Black, among one of the most religious demographics in the world. Whether you're just beginning your journey or have long since stepped away from organized faith, this is a safe space to share experiences, ask questions, and build community with others who understand the unique challenges of leaving religion while navigating cultural and familial expectations.
This event is hosted by BN's ChiTown affiliate, and will be on location at the Hegewisch Public Library Branch in Chicago, IL, and on Zoom. Free to attend, but please register in advance. Starts at 1:30 pm CST, 2:30 pm EST.
