SINNERS Movie -Conversations around Religious Trauma, Music & Black Spirituality

Details

The recently released film SINNERS (by Warner Brothers, Proximity Media, and Ryan Coogler) has stirred powerful reactions—especially for those of us who’ve experienced the complexity of faith, control, identity, and survival within the Black church. This peer support group session will create space to reflect on the themes raised in the film, including religious trauma, Secular vs Gospel music, community, autonomy and Black spirituality.
Together, we’ll explore:

  • What the film brought up for us emotionally and spiritually

  • How music and worship were used to both connect and control

  • The deep wounds of shame, silence, and being labeled “the sinner”

  • What healing looks like after surviving religious and spiritual abuse in Black faith spaces

This is a sacred space to share, process, and be witnessed in truth—without judgment or pressure. You do not need to have seen the film to attend, but if you are trying to avoid spoilers this particular group event might not be beneficial for you. Come as you are, and let’s hold space for reflection, truth-telling, and healing.
