Reclaiming Our Emotions & The Freedom to Feel After Religious Trauma

Details

In many Black religious spaces, especially The Black Church, emotions like anger, sadness, fear, or even joy were often seen as weaknesses—or signs of spiritual failure. We were told to “pray it away,” “have more faith,” or “praise through it,” instead of being given space to feel, process, and honor our emotions. Over time, many of us learned to silence our feelings in the name of obedience, holiness, or strength.

This support group gathering is a space for Black survivors of religious trauma to begin reclaiming the fullness of the spectrum of their emotions—without shame or fear. Together, we’ll explore how religious teachings suppressed our emotional selves, and how reconnecting to our feelings is a vital step in healing and liberation.

Whether you're reconnecting with your emotions for the first time or learning to trust your feelings again, this is a safe, affirming space for truth-telling, reflection, and community support.
Come as you are. Your emotions are not sins to suppress—they are sacred parts of you reclaiming your voice, your power, and your freedom.
