January 2026 Spiritual Abuse Awareness Month Continues!!!!

In many Black spiritual spaces, faith has been used not only as a source of hope and survival, but also as a tool of control. Teachings about obedience, submission, spiritual coverings, respect for authority, etc. have often been framed as love, protection, or God’s will — even when they caused harm.

For Black survivors, this harm is rarely acknowledged. Instead, questioning leadership, teachings, or spiritual authority is often labeled as rebellion, pride, or a lack of faith. Fear of punishment — spiritual, relational, or communal — keeps many people silent long after the damage is done.

During this meetup, we'll discuss how faith has been weaponized in Black churches and spiritual communities to enforce compliance and suppress autonomy.

This is a peer-led, survivor-centered conversation where your experiences are valid and your questions are welcome. There is no pressure to defend religion, minimize harm, or rush healing.
