What we’re about

Are you black? A descendent of the African Diaspora? Do you also happen to speak or want to learn Spanish? When you speak Spanish do others respond to you in English or give you a "Spanish Test?" Do you notice that racially ambiguous/white appearing Spanish learners are spoken to in Spanish with more ease? Have you become nervous and unsure of speaking Spanish? Are you frustrated? Thinking about giving up? Don't! Come to Black Spanish instead.

The goal of Black Spanish is to create a space for you to feel safe, accepted and encouraged to speak and learn as much Spanish as you desire. Through outings, and activities with people who share the same language goals and social difficulties, we will find a reprieve from the microaggressions, and invalidation that black Spanish speakers face.

Indirectly, we will be educating those around us about the existence of Black Spanish in the DC area, and hopefully, making it a little bit easier for Black Spanish everywhere.
