Whose Knowledge Counts? A Black Women’s Philosophy Circle

Details

Welcome to the Black Women of LA Philosophy Club. No PhD required—just curiosity, life experience, and a love for good conversation.

For our first meetup, we’ll chat about Epistemology & “Ways of Knowing.” We’ll explore questions like: whose voices are considered “intellectual,” whose knowledge counts, and which forms of knowing—intuition, storytelling, or communal wisdom—are undervalued?

Consider reflecting on these ahead of time:

  1. When have you felt that your knowledge or perspective was dismissed or undervalued?
  2. Are there forms of knowing you rely on daily that don’t get recognized in mainstream society?
  3. Which philosophers, thinkers, or writers (from any tradition) help you think about how knowledge works and who gets to produce it?
  4. Can personal stories, community wisdom, or cultural knowledge be as important as formal theory?

Bring your thoughts, questions, and curiosities. This will be a circle for conversation, not a lecture—your voice matters here.
