What Counts as Beautiful? Rethinking Aesthetics & the Black Feminine

Details

Welcome back to the Black Women of LA Philosophy Club. No PhD required—just curiosity, life experience, and a love for deep conversation.

For our second meetup, we'll dive into beauty, aesthetics, and the Black feminine. We’ll ask: how do Black women define, share, and shape beauty on their own terms? Is there a shared sense of beauty among us, and how does it emerge from our experiences, creativity, and community?

Consider reflecting on these ahead of time:

  • How do you define beauty for yourself, beyond societal or mainstream standards?
  • How have you influenced or shaped ideas of beauty among the women in your life or community?
  • Do Black women collectively have a sense of aesthetic or shared beauty standard—how does it form, evolve, or differ across contexts?
  • Which thinkers or writers help you see beauty as knowledge, power, or a philosophical act?

Bring your thoughts, questions, and experiences. This is a circle for conversation, not a lecture—your voice matters here.
