What we’re about
Welcome to Black Butterfly
A Black & Indigenous Neurodivergent Disabled Nature Collective
Black Butterfly is a group for folks who are Black or Indigenous, Neurodivergent, and Disabled. We gather primarily outdoors in nature, or indoors with a nature-centered focus. At the heart of this group is our connection with nature as a community, and through that connection we deepen our wellbeing, our wisdom, and our original uncolonized ways of being in the world.
In Black Butterfly we come together in the Spirit of Ubuntu, with deep reverence and respect for Mother Earth as well as each other. Our community will grow organically and mindfully, finding ways to flourish together with care, respect, and joy.
All events are designed to feel welcoming, supportive, accessible, sensory-friendly, and low-pressure. Gatherings may include basking in nature, workshops, discussions, meditations, and field trips. As we grow, we will continue to co-create our own adventures, honoring our unique ways of experiencing.
About the Organizer
Hi, I’m Asha. I created this group based on my own experiences as a Black, Neurodivergent, and Disabled woman who loves nature. It’s not always easy finding outdoor spaces that are accessible, welcoming, and that don’t trigger all your sensory, social, and anxiety bells. Yet nature has been one of the few public spaces where I can simply exist and feel at home.
Over the years I’ve persisted in finding outdoor spaces that work for me, and through devotion to being in nature I’ve found profound healing. Its a practice where I’ve deepened my ancestral connection to the land, regained my sense of belonging, and learned how to create experiences, and a life on my own terms. One of my favorite lessons Mother Nature has shared with me is that every creature has its place, and can thrive in the right habitat.
