She struggles with homesickness, explores her sexuality, and grapples with the lingering emotional scars of colonialism and maternal betrayal.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR…
Antiguan-American author Jamaica Kincaid (born Elaine Potter Richardson), now 77 years old, is best known for her powerful, semi-autobiographical novels, lyrical essays, and unflinching explorations of colonialism, feminism, and complex family relationships. Born in St. John’s (the capital of Antigua and Barbuda), she currently lives in Vermont and is African American Studies in Residence Emerita at Harvard University.
