SYNOPSIS…..
Without spoilers, we can say this movie revolves around the power of blues music. Set in 1932 Jim Crow era Mississippi, Sinners follows two twin brothers as they return home after working for the bootleggers in Chicago. Sinners is frequently discussed as a work of Southern Gothic Afrofuturism. While set in the 1930s rather than the future, it blends speculative and supernatural horror with Black cultural themes to reclaim Black history and envision alternative realities of survival. After the film, we will discuss the way the female characters were portrayed (especially compared to how women used to be portrayed in horror films) as well as the central metaphors of the film. (2025, 2 hours 17 minutes.)
