Frank’s carbon fibre bike – and his business - was built in just two years.

“In 2017 I had this idea to design my own carbon fibre hybrid e-bike. It started with one just for me and now we have four different models,” says Frank.

"I wanted a bike which I couldn’t find," he says. "I liked carbon and there wasn’t anything available so I thought I might as well do it myself”.

The bike is between 3 and 5kgs lighter than most e-bikes, runs “as smooth as a baby’s bum”, and Frank is now in talks with potential distributors in the US and Europe.

Frank is a serial entrepreneur. Hybrid Bikes is his third startup. He sold his first, Solar Technology Company, to Steven Tindall’s K1W1 investment vehicle after five years.

The German engineer who settled in Nelson 23 years ago, describes himself as a strategic thinker who uses his diverse experience to develop innovative solutions and strategies.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Frank is an experienced entrepreneur and mechanical engineer. He is a self-confessed workaholic and has a passion for e-bikes and carbon fibre.

Frank is a driven entrepreneur who likes to take life and business challenges to the next level. He has extensive management and marketing experience in both B2B and B2C environments. In the last 15 years Frank has worked with businesses around the globe selling more than $30 million of products and services.

In 2004 Frank formed Solar Technology Systems in Nelson which focused on design & manufacturing evacuated Solar Water Heating systems, which reached the highest performing rating in New Zealand based on EECA performance testing. Frank sold this company to Sir Steven Tindall’s K1W1 investment company five years later.

In 2009 Frank formed Solar Electric Technology which focused on Solar PV systems installations nationwide. Some installations reached 200 Solar PV panels in Nelson. Frank sold this company in 2016 to recover after being diagnosed with cancer.

In 2016 Frank formed NZ China Trade Consultants, a service that facilitates trade between Chinese and New Zealand companies.

In 2017 Frank designed his first carbon fibre hybrid e-bike. After completing the first full year of trading in August 2019, Hybrid Bikes is now ready to enter Europe and the US.

The German born engineer moved to Nelson in 1996 with his wife of 27 years and their children.
