Thursday Night's Blogger Meetup Recap

From: Karl M.
Sent on: Friday, April 13, 2012 7:50 AM

Last night was the first blogger meetup in a long while, which I apologize for. Thanks to Eric for the suggestion to meet. That, and a small voice in the back of my head reminding me of Alex's motto (JFDI), pushed me to schedule this.

We had great turnout.  Six of fifteen, which is about what the old meetups used to be and the discussion was wide-ranging from first time introductions, to how to connect with others online, to some elements of the terrific media and tech community that Philadelphia is home of and how to become part of it.

Links related to discussions:

1) IndyHall:

2) Geekadelphia:

3) Ignite Philly:

4) Philly Tech Week:

5) Bar Camp Philly:

6) Google Author Pages:

7) Hacks/Hackers Philly

Action Items (Suggestions please everyone!):

1) We need a better home for the monthly meetup.  One with a little room for possible on-the-fly collaboration on projects, Wi-Fi, and a little less background noise than Nodding Head.

2) As discussed, we can use more folks being meeting coordinators.  This meetup, in particular, should not be relegated to Center City. I'd love to do a regular 'blogging and bagels/code and coffee' project riffing meetup in NE Philly for example.  Bi-weekly for an hour would be fantastic.  But that can only happen if we management of this meetup distributed.  Help please :)

3) Everyone agreed that having a theme for a meetup, to focus discussion after a sharing what we are working on, would be helpful.  Example themes: how to find bloggers who are writing about what you write about and start a conversation, tools to understand who is visiting your blog and why, discussion moderation techniques and tools, etc.

4) We will need some guidelines to keep the meetup list from devolving into self-promotion.

Lets not stop here

Please use this mailing list to discuss the meetup, what it can be, and how we can get it there (especially the action items listed above: [address removed]

Don't be hesitant to bring up anything related to blogging and personal web presence management.

This meetup group has a fantastic tapestry of members, some of which are part of the history of the online movement in Philadelphia and many of which are just joining it.  We can each learn so much from one another.

I can be quite the introvert, but I have always believed that when people connect and build relationships, amazing things can happen. This meetup in the past was a powerful, amazing expression of that. I hope, with your help, it could be again.
