The Community Update features the latest news about Meetup exclusively from the Meetup team. This edition focuses on Meetup communities in Asia and Oceania (Australia & New Zealand).

Main Takeaways:

  • Asia and Oceania are the fastest growing regions for Meetup. Thank you for all you do!
  • Online events are here to stay, but we want to talk about the future of our communities. How we create human connections and to do so safely?
  • We are initiating our Get Back Together movement starting in 3 areas: China, Hong Kong, and New Zealand.
    • We’re working with organizers and members to set a goal. When that goal is met, Meetup will donate 50% of your next month’s subscription to Global Giving’s Coronavirus Relief Fund.
    • We’ll be expanding to more areas in the future, as situations allow.
  • If and when you feel that it is safe for your group to meet in person, here are some helpful guidelines.

Top Q&A Questions:

  • Can you show timezones more accurately and specifically? For both members and organizers.
    • I cannot agree more about how important showing the correct time zone is. It’s definitely on our roadmap and the priority will be raised. There’s a lot of tricky aspects to timezones, but the number one priority for us is your members. We want the experience for your members to be clear and we’re working on it.
  • Are there any plans to expand the number of supported currencies? What about cryptocurrency?
    • The lack of flexibility in currency, in credit cards, is something that frustrates me. As we look at our product roadmap, it’s something we absolutely need to do (but it’s an even bigger project than the time zone display).
We’ll be looking into cryptocurrencies as well. We’re here to listen to your needs.
  • Should we follow local rules when it comes to hosting in-person events?
    • Yes. You should follow local rules set by your government and other local authorities. If local authorities are saying that it is safe, and you feel comfortable, Meetup is not stopping you from hosting in-person events.
