Harpers Ferry to Maryland Heights

Details

This is approximately a 16 kilometer hike from the Harpers Ferry Visitor Parking lot (39.3158, -77.7562) to the Stone Fort on top of Maryland Heights and back to Visitor Parking. AllTrails rates this as a moderately strenuous trail with approximately 350 meters of elevation from the C&O Canal to the top of Maryland Heights and taking 4 - 5 hours to complete. This is a very popular area for birding, hiking, and running, so we'll likely encounter other people while hiking. Dogs are welcome, but must be on a leash.

At the end of the hike, individuals may want to break off from the group and explore Harpers Ferry on their own. The National Park Service offers some interesting displays and information about the significance of Harpers Ferry in our Nation's history. The Appalachian Trail runs right through the town and the Appalachian Trail Conservancy and other historic sites are located in Harpers Ferry as well.

Note: Entry to the Visitor Parking lot requires a National Park Pass or a fee.
