Description:
Come join us for a relaxed Saturday afternoon of Hong Kong Style Mahjong, drinks, and conversation.
What is Mahjong? It’s a four-player tile game where you draw and discard tiles to build a winning hand. It combines strategy, observation, and the ability to look completely calm when someone takes the tile you desperately needed. Think of it as a friendly puzzle where the other three people keep interfering with your plans.
This Mahjong gathering is a sub-event of Dustin’s broader Saturday board game event at Santa Monica Brew Works. We are hosting our Mahjong tables under Dustin’s event. Please follow his event guidelines along with the Mahjong guidelines below.
Mahjong participation is by advance sign-up only. We will have three tables with room for up to 12 players. Please sign up specifically for the Mahjong sub-event. Registration for Dustin’s main board game event does not reserve a Mahjong seat.
Returning players and first-time participants are welcome. Teaching will be provided to non-players and beginners. No prior experience is necessary. We will explain the basics, help you through your first hands, and gently point out when your brilliant strategy has become a collection of unrelated tiles.
We are strictly playing Hong Kong Style Mahjong. American Mahjong is not allowed at these tables. Please leave the jokers at home. We already have enough characters in the group.
Everyone is expected to bring a positive attitude. Please be patient with beginners, respectful toward other players, and appreciative of the time and effort that make this free event possible.
Please appreciate that Mahjong participation and teaching are being offered at no charge. Some other Los Angeles Mahjong events have advertised admission of $15 (Lucky Bamboo Mahjong Club at Studious in Chinatown) or $20 (DTLASIA’s early-bird admission). Prices, session lengths, and instruction vary by event. A little gratitude, cooperation, and good sportsmanship go a long way toward helping us keep this gathering welcoming and free.
The games are best suited for beginner to intermediate players. Our focus is on learning, friendly conversation, and having a good time. There is strictly no gambling, betting, wagering, or money involved in gameplay.
Please arrive by 12:00 PM so we can organize the tables and get started smoothly. We will play until approximately 2:00 PM.
No winning strategy is required. Most of us are still testing several unsuccessful ones.

🍺 VENUE PURCHASE REQUIREMENT
Please purchase at least one menu item from Santa Monica Brew Works during the event.
Food and drinks are purchased separately and paid directly to the venue. Non-alcoholic beverages are available, and purchasing alcohol is not required.
Please follow Dustin’s event guidelines and the venue’s policies. Keep food and drinks clear of the Mahjong equipment, and help us leave the tables tidy.
Thank you for supporting the venue and helping us be considerate guests within Dustin’s broader board game event.

🤝 Community Code of Conduct & Good Sportsmanship
Please be cordial, respectful, patient, and welcoming toward other players, Dustin, the Mahjong host, venue employees, and other customers.
We are sharing space with Dustin’s broader board game event. Please keep noise reasonable, respect other games in progress, and keep walkways and neighboring tables clear.
Some players will be learning. Give them time to think, ask questions, and understand the game. Helpful explanations are welcome. Rude or dismissive comments are not.
Handle disagreements about rules, scoring, or gameplay calmly. If you need help resolving something, ask the Mahjong host.
Questions and feedback are welcome when communicated respectfully. Aggressive, threatening, harassing, bullying, discriminatory, or deliberately disruptive behavior is not acceptable.
Respect personal boundaries. If someone asks you to stop a behavior or give them space, respect that request.
Please play fairly and treat the Mahjong equipment with care. No cheating, deliberate disruption, or demanding a formal investigation into why someone else keeps winning.
Follow reasonable instructions from Dustin, the Mahjong host, and brewery staff. Disruptive behavior may result in removal from the Mahjong tables. Concerns affecting the broader event will be referred to Dustin or venue staff.
We are here to enjoy the game and each other’s company. The tiles can provide all the drama we need.

🚫 No Gambling / No Money Involved in Gameplay
This is a strictly non-gambling Mahjong sub-event.
There will be no gambling, betting, wagering, cash play, buy-ins, side bets, money pools, or prize pools.
Mahjong is played only for fun, learning, and social enjoyment. Any points or scores are for tracking the game only and have no monetary value.
No money will be collected, exchanged, won, or lost based on Mahjong hands, points, scores, wins, or losses. Food and drink purchases are entirely separate from gameplay.
Anyone attempting to organize gambling, collect gambling funds, or involve other players in wagering will be removed from the Mahjong sub-event. The matter will also be brought to Dustin’s attention.
The only thing at stake is your confidence in that last discard.

📅 Cancellation Policy
If you can no longer attend, please cancel your Mahjong RSVP at least 24 hours before the event starts.
With three tables and a maximum of 12 players, each seat matters. Canceling in advance gives another player the opportunity to join and helps us organize the games.
....................................................................................................
Come spend a fun Saturday afternoon playing Hong Kong Style Mahjong as part of Dustin’s board game event. Meet a few people, enjoy a drink, and learn something new.
Play for fun. Be kind. Respect the venue. No gambling.
And remember: if your strategy falls apart, look thoughtfully at your tiles. Everyone will assume you have a plan. If someone asks what that plan is, say you’re keeping your options open. 🀄🍺😄
