Whiskey Creek Canoe and Harkerville Coastal Hiking trail 6 day holiday tour.

Details

Join us for an unforgettable time exploring the Whiskey Creek Canoe Trail including the 2 day Harkerville Coastal Hiking backpack trail in the Garden Route.
We are just one adventurous soul away from completing our hiking group of 10 people.
The Whiskey Creek Canoe Trail is a popular overnight canoe adventure in the Keurbooms River Nature Reserve, South Africa, offering a scenic and secluded experience. It involves a 7km paddle up the river to reach a rustic but comfortable cabin, which is the only accessible way to explore the higher reaches of the river.
The Harkerville Coastal trail is situated between Knysna and Plettenberg Bay. This hike is not your conventional two-day hiking trail. If you’re not a fan of little wooden bridges, ladders, chains, steep cliffs, narrow wooden stairs and soaring heights, you may want to consider another hike. However, if these things excite you, go for it! The feeling of accomplishment at the end is incredible, and you won’t be disappointed.

Other highlights on this tour include visits to Pepsi Pools near George, Arch Rock and Cathedral Rock near Keurboomstrand, a short hiking excursion through Little Fern Forest as well as short hiking excursions at Diepwalle Forest Station near Knysna.

Basic agenda:
2025-12-23: We will drive to George and make a stop at Nelson Mandela University from where we’ll begin our hike towards Pepsi Pools.
This out and back hike spans 5 km and offers opportunities for swimming.
Afterward, we’ll continue to Island Vibe backpackers in Knysna for supper and to stay overnight.
2025-12-24: We will stop at Keurboomsriver Mouth to explore Arch Rock and Cathedral Rock during low tide.
Following lunch, we’ll start canoeing during high tide on the Keurbooms River to reach a cabin where we will have a braai and spend the night.
2025-12-25: We will canoe back to Keurbooms River Mouth.
Then travel toward Diepwalle Forest Station for our overnight stay, stopping at Little Fern Forest for a picnic and a short hike.
We will also stop to blow the “Recalling the Elephant’s” horn at the Prince Alfred’s Pass.
2025-12-26: We’ll arrive at Harkerville Hikers Hut and spend the day on the Perdekop trail to hike through the area’s indigenous forests.
For those interested, there’s also the option to experience the Harkerville zip line if they are not interested in hiking the Perdekop trail.
2025-12-27: Begin the Harkerville 2 day overnight backpack and stay overnight at the Sinclair hikers hut. Today we will follow the Harkerville Red Route Mountain Bike trail through indigenous forest which is a shortcut to the overnight hut, skipping parts of the longer coastal trail.
2025-12-28: We'll complete the Harkerville 2-day overnight trail. The 12 km on day two may sound shorter but isn’t less daunting. Finally, we'll drive back to Cape Town.

Suggestions for the Harkerville Coastal Trail:

  • Travel light. Don't pack any unnecessary items but do take at least 2 litres of fluid per day.
  • There’s no drinking water along the way and it can become extremely hot.
  • Take warm clothing too as the weather is pretty unpredictable.
  • Wear suitable shoes or hiking boots. There are plenty of loose marble shaped stones and large rocks to negotiate and shoes which support your ankles are advisable.
  • You need to be quite fit as there are many ups and downs.
  • Stop and rest and snack regularly and enjoy the spectacular views.
  • Take enough water; there is not any along the route. The water at the hut is drinkable.

Highlights of this Garden Route trip that covers more than 1100 kms:

  • Pepsi Pools. A natural swimming spot perfect for hot days.
  • Arch Rock and Cathedral Rock. Stunning coastal rock formations with breathtaking views at Keurboomstrand Beach.
  • Staying in cozy backpackers and hikers hut.
