Sosyskloof, Jonkershoek Nature Reserve, Stellenbosch

Join us for a breathtaking hiking adventure on the stunning Sosyskloof trail at Jonkershoek Nature Reserve near Stellenbosch. This 12 km circular hike takes you on a thrilling journey through diverse landscapes and showcasing the region's natural beauty.
The reserve is situated amidst the majestic Jonkershoek Mountains, characterized by towering peaks such as Bothmaskop, Square Tower Peak, Twin Peaks, Virgin Peaks and Ridge Peaks. The Jonkershoek Mountains play a crucial role as a mountain catchment area where significant rivers, such as the Berg River, Lourens River, and Riviersonderend Rivers, originate.

Hike Details:
- Distance: 11-12 km
- Elevation gain: 390m
- Grade 2B hike
- Duration: approximately 5-6 hours, depending on length of rest breaks.
- Difficulty: Moderate

Basic agenda:
We'll start and end at the parking area near the entrance gate. You might want to grab some coffee at Balance Coffee Roastery before the hike, which is conveniently located near the gate.
Please note that due to vehicle restrictions, we'll need to use the Forestry roads for the first 3 km to reach the Sosyskloof trailhead. From there, we'll ascend a zig-zagging footpath leading to a fire lookout. We'll take a well-deserved break at the lookout, where we'll be surrounded by rugged mountain scenery.
After the fire lookout, the mountain path levels out and continues south on an elevated contour path, passing the beautiful Sosyskloof river and waterfall. This elevated contour path offers stunning views of Jonkershoek Valley with a backdrop of mountains. It passes through a small pocket of afromontane forest and then a scree (or talus?) section before joining the Swartboskloof path to descend back to the valley.
From here, a flat walk follows all along the Eerste River to the Jonkershoek Dam and then back to the entrance gate and car park.
