Rocking the Cederberg at Sanddrif Holiday Farm

Details

"Rocking the Cederberg" captures the essence of an adventurous weekend in the Cederberg, highlighting the region's unique and breathtaking rock formations.
Please join us to visit some of the most amazing rock sites of the Cederberg Wilderness area on a short camping weekend trip to Sanddrif Holiday Farm.
During this camping trip, we will explore the following sites around Sanddrif Holiday Farm:

1. Hike to Lot's Wife and Window Rocks:
The Intriguing Rock formations known as Lot’s Wife and Window Rocks are a leisurely 5km stroll from the main road. Taking on the shape of a praying woman, the formation was named after a Biblical figure. The whole story of Lot’s wife, who turned into a salt pillar, is recounted in the Bible.

2. Admire the Stadsaal Caves and Khoisan rock art:
Step back in time and visit the famous Stadsaal Caves, whose name is probably due to the many alleys inside the caves. During the 19th Century, the Stadsaal Cave was used for community meetings.

3. Experience the Wolfberg Cracks and Wolfberg Arch:
Hiking to the Wolfberg Cracks and Wolfberg Arch involves steep sections, but is worth doing. The Wolfberg Arch hike via Wolfberg Cracks starts at the foot of the Wolfberg. This out and back trail is about 12 km long with no water on route. Remember to carry enough water and snacks to keep you energised.

4. Stargazing near Dwarsrivier:
The Cederberg offers a star spectacle most of the year, due to the clear sky, Weather permitting, there is a two-hour show on Saturday at 8:00 p.m.

5. Explore Truitjieskraal:
The popular Truitjieskraal is a crag in the Cederberg amidst dramatic sandstone formations, with impressive rock paintings.

Basic agenda:
Friday 22 August
We'll depart at 7:00 AM from Engen Winelands One Stop.
At 9:00 AM, we'll stop in Porterville to grab refreshments at Winkelshoek garage.
We'll continue our journey, taking the Algeria turnoff over Nieuwoudts Pass and Uitkyk Pass. We'll stop at a parking area near Lot's Wife and walk to Window Rocks. This is a flat route, just less than 5 km with only a 100-meter elevation gain.
Next we'll visit Dwarsrivier where the permits can be purchased to visit Stadsaal Caves.
From Dwarsrivier, we'll drive past Sanddrif and take the turnoff to the Stadsaal caves. We'll spend ample time there before returning to Sanddrif to set up camp.
Braai fires will be lit at 6:00 PM for a relaxed evening of socializing and braai.

Saturday 23 August:
We'll depart from Sanddrif at 8:00 AM and drive to the parking area below Wolfberg Cracks. Please note that permits are required to pass through a gate.
The hike from the parking area, through the narrow crevasses to Wolfberg Arch, and back through the main crevasses, covers more than 12 km with a total ascent of over 630 meters. This is a challenging route that requires a good level of fitness. There is no water available on this route, so please ensure you bring at least 2 liters of water with you.
We anticipate being back at the cars by 4:00 PM, after which we'll drive the short distance back to the Sanddrif camp.
Braai fires will be lit again at 6:00 PM for an enjoyable evening of socializing and braai, extending into the late hours.

Sunday 24 August:
By 11:00 AM, we'll pack up and head to Truitjieskraal.
Please remember to bring your permits.
We'll drive down Kromrivier Pass to Kromrivier Park, and from there, it's a short drive on a sandy jeep track to Truitjieskraal. There will be several farm gates along the way that we'll need to close behind us.
After exploring Truitjieskraal, we'll drive a short distance to Cederberg Oasis to enjoy refreshments at their restaurant.
From Cederberg Oasis, we'll drive 110 km through the Koue Bokkeveld to Ceres, and then make our way back home. We anticipate arriving home after 5:00 PM.
This concludes the itinerary.
