Three Sisters from Fairy Glen picnic spot, Kleinmond

Details

The Kleinmond Coastal and Mountain Nature Reserve is synonymous with the Cape Floral Kingdom, the tiniest of the planet’s 6 plant kingdoms. Elaine once remarked during a hiking trip here: "For every step you take, there is a different flower".
While this may be somewhat true, it shows the magnificence of this region's rich floral diversity, especially during Spring in September.
Come and enjoy one of the Kleinmond-Palmiet area's scenic trails with us, which are managed by the Overstrand Municipality and volunteer organisations who painstakingly packed rock steps which must have taken them many months and even years of work.

Basic agenda:
We will start and end this circular hike from the Fairy Glen picnic area. From here, a path meanders through rich mountain fynbos gradually ascending until a small waterfall is reached. The Kasteelkop Nek trail continues further amongst beautiful rock formations and a diverse spectrum of fynbos until a bench is reached. This bench provides lovely views to the beach and the Palmiet valley below. A short ascend takes us to the contour path that circumnavigates the southern part of Three Sisters. This contour path descends slightly until a turnoff is reached towards Jean's Hill.
From here on, the hard work starts when we ascend to Sandown Peak.
A flat section follows before we finally ascend to the last Sister requiring a bit of rock scrambling. The fantastic views make up for the hard work to reach this peak standing 634 meter above sea level. From here you can see far into Kogelberg Nature Reserve and out to the ocean on the left. It’s an incredible view, and the highest point on this hike, so spend a while relaxing here.
After reaching the summit, the path descends steeply to Spooknek, where we'll join a trail called Dot's Dash. This path is famous for its spectacular display of Ericas and Heaths, especially at this time of year. The trail and its name originated from someone called Dorothy who illegally collected wildflowers in this area. Spooknek gets its name from the howling sound the wind makes as it blows over the nek.
Dot's Dash descends gently to the Fairy Glen Plateau. From there, we'll follow the Klipspringer trail, an easy zigzag path that further descends through magnificent rock formations and wildflowers, passing a beautiful waterfall. Finally, we'll hike through a lovely, small indigenous forest called Feetjiesbos ("Fairy forest"), which will bring us back to the picnic spot.

Hike Details:
- Distance: 12km, circular
- Total elevation gain: 760m
- Grade 3A hike
- Duration: approximately 5-6 hours, depending on length of rest breaks.
- Difficulty: mostly moderate and challenging at short sections. There are some steep rocky sections of this hike that require a little bit of scrambling, but nothing too technical. I would advise that you be conditioned for hiking and be fairly sure-footed.
