Suther Cracks, Suther Peak and Karbonkelberg

Details

Get ready for an adrenaline-packed adventure like no other!
Lace up your hiking boots and join us on a thrilling hike to Suther Peak, where breathtaking views await at the summit. This 9 km, 700 meter elevation challenge will push your limits as you navigate through rugged terrain featuring: scrambling over rocky outcrops, squeezing through sheer vertical cracks, crawling under narrow horizontal crevices, tree-climbing and exhilaring rock scrambling to reach the summit.

The reward? Breathtaking 360-degree views from Suther Peak that will leave you awestruck!

Suther Peak is often pronounced "Suffer Peak" due to the challenging and strenuous nature of the climb. It's a nickname given by trail runners and hikers to describe the intense physical effort required to reach the summit. While the actual name is Suther Peak, the "Suffer Peak" reflects the difficult and demanding experience of ascending it.

Basic agenda:
Soon after starting the hike from a small parking area, we will walk through a dune area to join a hiking path leading to Rocket Road. Crossing Rocket Road, the path continues towards Suther Peak, gradually ascending until a rock face is reached. Chains are provided to assist hikers in getting to the flat rock above, which provides the perfect spot for a coffee break.
As we continue on the well-used path, we'll reach a massive rectangular boulder a few hundred meters before the summit. From there, we'll leave the path and navigate through a rocky corridor, moving around the northern rockface to enter a large vertical crack. After exiting these cracks, we'll encounter a low-lying horizontal gap, requiring us to bend down for a short distance until we reach a tree.
After descending from the tree, we'll reach a gully where our next challenge awaits. We'll need good foot and hand coordination to navigate out of a rocky labyrinth and up a steep rock face. A rope could be very helpful for this last tricky section before we get to Suther Peak. Finally, a short ladder will allow us to reach the summit of Suther Peak, where we can enjoy spectacular views stretching from Little Lions Head all the way to Lions Head.
From Suther Peak, we'll continue towards Karbonkelberg, following a clear footpath that descends into a valley, winding through a beautiful yellowwood forest.
You'll notice the distinct microclimates on the north and south-facing hills, which lead to a remarkable variety in vegetation. This valley is truly a "flower bouquet" and offers magnificent views looking north towards Table Mountain. We'll then follow a flat, clear footpath until we reach a viewpoint overlooking Llandudno and Sandy Bay. From this spot, we'll also be able to see the BOS 400 shipwreck, a French barge that ran aground during a storm on June 26, 1994.
From this viewpoint, we will turn around and hike back to Suther Peak using the same route we came from. Once we reach Suther Peak, we'll follow the main hiking path back to the cars, enjoying all the scenery in reverse.
