Camping and hiking weekend at Beaverlac, Porterville
Details
The Beaverlac camp, nestled high in the Olifants River Mountains above Porterville, is a beautiful and rustic natural heritage site known for its wild, tranquil setting. It offers a variety of activities to keep visitors engaged. The main attractions are the crystal-clear natural rock pools and waterfalls, carved by the Ratel (which means Honey Badger) and Olifants rivers. The area also boasts a wide variety of trails, ranging from easy riverside walks to more challenging routes through the surrounding mountains. For those seeking a longer adventure, the Totem Pools are accessible via a 5 km hike and provide a more secluded experience. Alternatively, a less strenuous, shorter walk will lead you to the calm Secret Pools, which are perfect for a day of relaxation and swimming.
Basic agenda:
We will be arriving at Beaverlac Camp on Friday, February 6, 2026, from 15:00 onwards. Our plan is to find a suitable shaded campsite under the trees. Before starting the braai fires at 18:00, we're looking forward to getting familiar with the surrounding area and taking a quick dip in the nearest pool.
The next day, we'll take a 1.5 hour inclined walk up the Leopard Trail. Be sure to keep right, as trails to the left head back into the riverbed. Along the way to the Totem Pools, we'll pass beautiful pools and waterfalls. Halfway there, you'll find a long, flat section of rock with a pool just above it. If the water level is high enough, you can even slide on the rocks.
Beyond hiking to the pools and enjoying the crystal-clear rock pools, there are some exciting opportunities for exploration, including searching for caves that contain rock paintings.
Back at the campsite, we'll relax until it's time to light the fire and prepare the potjiekos for the evening under the unspoilt, starry sky.
Remember that their shop sells wood, beer, wine, ice, bread, snacks and other basic items. Shop hours are seasonally dependant.
Our final day at Beaverlac will be spent at the Secret Pools. These pools can be reached by an easy 10 minutes hike from the campsite.
We will enjoy the Secret Pools until we need to return to the campsite and pack up for our 13:00 PM departure.
Our final stop is at the Porta Taverna Restaurant in Porterville for a hearty countryside lunch. Just remember, it closes promply at 15:00 on Sundays.
The basics: what you need to know about Beaverlac:
- Everyone in our group needs to apply and be approved before you arrive.
- Dogs are allowed, as long as you can control them.
- Beaverlac is a family campsite, so they ask for quiet after 10pm, and no music at any time of day
- Beaverlac is cash only, and a solid 1-hour drive from the nearest town.
- They have an uncommonly well-stocked shop and good bathrooms
- The dirt road into Beaverlac can be harsh on small cars; if you have the option, it’s best to go in a larger or even offroad vehicle.
