Agatha's Gully-Caveman's Overhang-Disa Gorge and Orange Kloof
Details
If you’re up for crawling, climbing, and tackling tough terrain with a group of like-minded adventurers, this is your chance.
The journey ventures through Agatha’s Gully, where you’ll balance along a narrow ledge and later on squeeze through rocky crevices to reach a hidden overhang. The final stretch takes us into the restricted Orange Kloof at Disa Gorge, a place very few get to see.
Access is limited, so only 12 people can join this hike.
Hike Details:
- Distance: 13-14km, circular
- Total elevation gain: +/- 720m
- Grade 3B hike
- Duration: approximately 5-6 hours, depending on length of rest breaks.
- Difficulty: Fit and experienced hikers must navigate short exposed ledges, squeeze through rocky crevices and tunnels, weave over and under boulders, and push past thorny bushes without minding the occasional scratch.
Basic agenda:
Beginning at Constantia Neck, the circular trail gradually climbs along the Hoerikwaggo route toward Eagle’s Nest. After a short rest, the ascent continues along Constantia Neck until an unclear path is reached that guides hikers toward Agatha’s Gully.
After traversing a narrow ledge, the trail climbs steeply before rejoining the familiar route toward Camel Rock, continuing on to the De Villiers Dam and the Overseers hut above Table Mountain.
Just beyond the Overseer’s Hut, we’ll follow a footpath toward the De Villiers Dam wall, where a trail leads us through dense scrub and mountain vegetation, winding over boulders until we arrive at Hole in the Wall.
The faint path traces a short, exposed ledge before winding into rocky corridors that require hikers to scramble through. Eventually, Caveman’s Overhang comes into view, offering magnificent vistas over Orange Kloof. It’s an ideal resting point before the final ascent through a small forest draped in Old Man’s Beard.
The trail leads to a short tunnel that hikers must crawl through, emerging onto an overhang with sweeping views of the Victoria Reservoir. From this vantage point, a lesser-used path continues, eventually joining a jeep track just before the reservoir.
We’ll follow the flat jeep track until reaching Woodhead Dam, where we cross the dam wall and descend into Disa Gorge, entering the heart of Orange Kloof.

The scenic Disa Gorge eventually leads to the Apostles Tunnel and the Woodhead Tunnel, where we pause briefly to explore. After this stop, the trail continues to Journey’s End, from which we descend further to meet the Outer Ring Road, guiding us back to the car park at Constantia Nek.
Fee to join hike: R200.
