Porcupine Ravine, Echo Valley and Upper Disa River, Table Mountain.
Details
Join us for a challenging alpine-style hike that will test your endurance and reward you with breathtaking views.
We’ll ascend the rugged Porcupine Ravine, traverse the mystical Echo Valley, and marvel at the tranquil beauty of both Helly Hutchinson Dam and Woodhead Dam on top of Table Mountain. Along the way, we’ll pass through the Upper Disa River and Aquaduct before making our descent via the iconic Kasteelspoort.
With over 800 meters of elevation gain, this hike is designed for fit hikers with alpine experience who crave adventure, camaraderie, and the thrill of conquering Table Mountain’s hidden gems.
Hike Details:
- Distance: 12-13 km, circular
- Total elevation gain: 810 meter
- Grade 3B hike
- Duration: approximately 5-6 hours, depending on length of rest breaks.
- Difficulty: Very good fitness required with mild rock scrambling at Porcupine Ravine and Diagonal. Includes segments that may be dangerous. Sure footedness required to descend Kasteelspoort.
Basic agenda:
Shortly after setting out from the small parking area on Hely Hutchinson Avenue, we’ll cross the Blinkwater Stream before ascending to the Pipe Track which leads us to the start of the Diagonal Trail. From this point, the trail rises steadily, winding in a series of zigzags until we reach Diagonal Cave—the perfect spot for our first rest.
Next comes a short, exposed ledge that may challenge those uneasy with heights. It navigates around Porcupine Buttress, leading hikers into the breathtaking Porcupine Ravine. A scrambling section follows, where hikers must push themselves upward over boulders and rocky steps.
As the gorge narrows with the ascent, the views grow increasingly spectacular.
After the strenuous climb, we will arrive in the tranquil Ark Valley before joining the Echo Valley footpath. The Echo Valley boardwalk follows the Upper Disa River, guiding visitors toward the Aquaduct and, ultimately, the Water Works Museum. Along the way, be sure to look out for Orion Cave, located just below Waaikoppie on the way to the Aquaduct.
After a short stop at the Water Works Museum, the hike proceeds across both the Hely Hutchinson and Woodhead Dam walls before joining the Old Railway Track. Along this route, you’ll pass the People’s Trail Hut and several Mountain Club huts above Table Mountain.
Finally, the Old Railway Track leads to the Old Cable Station, built in 1893, and the iconic Diving Board. From there, the descent through Kasteelspoort brings you back to the Pipe Track and the car park.
Fee to join hike: R70.
