Join us for a 12 km circular hike from Deer Park to Oppelskop, perfect for reasonably fit hikers eager to explore nature and history.
Deer Park, once a site for grazing and hunting during the colonial era, takes its name from the deer introduced to the Cape by European settlers in the 17th century.
On Oppelskop, the ruins that remain are remnants of military fortifications built in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, constructed to defend Cape Town against potential naval attacks.

Hike Details:
- Distance: 12km, circular
- Total elevation gain: +/- 560m
- Grade 2B hike
- Duration: approximately 4-5 hours, depending on length of rest breaks.
- Difficulty: Good fitness required, sure footedness, sturdy shoes, A short, exposed ledge near Oppelskop can be challenging for those who suffer from acrophobia.

Basic agenda:
We begin at the lower reaches of Deer Park, following a shaded woodland trail that winds toward Platteklip Stream and the historic Washer Houses. From there, a boardwalk carries us higher up Deer Park before giving way to a steep gravel road that climbs toward Tafelberg Road. The ascent continues along a rugged path leading to the Contour Path. A short detour to Union Cave provides the perfect spot for a coffee break; afterward, we press on to the beautiful Silwerstream Waterfall.
Shortly beyond Silwerstream Waterfall, the trail divides. Keep to the right-hand path, which rises gently in a zig-zag toward the Saddle, revealing sweeping vistas of Cape Town and its surroundings. The route then traces the rockface beneath Devil’s Peak before continuing on to Oppelskop, where yet another round of spectacular views awaits.
From Oppelskop, we descend a short but steep path to rejoin the Contour Path. Following it for about a kilometer, we reach a zigzag trail that winds down to Tafelberg Road. At Dead Man’s Tree, we make a sharp right turn onto a jeep track leading back toward Deer Park. Hiking sticks prove useful here, helping to steady footing on loose gravel. Once inside Deer Park again, a shaded trail guides us back to the car park on Deer Park Drive.
Once the hike wraps up, join us at Deer Park Café to unwind with a refreshing cold drink or a cup of coffee.
