We’re excited to invite all fit and sure‑footed hikers to an unforgettable day out in the Silvermine Nature Reserve. This 12 km circular hike promises both challenge and reward with highlights of the route that include: ascending the magnificent Steenberg Ridge, exploring the iconic Elephant’s Eye Cave, following the scenic Amphitheatre Path and finally summiting Vanguard Peak (557 m).

Hike Details:
- Distance: 12km, circular
- Total elevation gain: +/- 360m
- Grade 2B hike
- Duration: approximately 6-7 hours, depending on length of rest breaks.
- Difficulty: Good fitness required with mild rock scrambling sections at Steenberg Ridge. Descending the jeep tracks covered in loose gravel can be tricky, so sturdy hiking poles are highly recommended for extra balance and support.

Basic agenda:
Starting from the parking area near Silvermine Dam, the trail begins along the Silvermine Riverwalk. After a short stroll of a few hundred meters, we cross the river and then the tarred road. On the right lies the old Silvermine tented camp, while the path gradually ascends toward the Steenberg Ridge Path, opening up sweeping views to the east and north. The climb continues past towering sandstone boulders, with occasional platforms that provide breathtaking vantage points over the valley below. Eventually, the Steenberg Ridge Path levels out and crosses the Prinskasteel River, leading toward the fire lookout perched on a rocky ledge.
From this lookout, Elephant’s Eye cave is clearly visible. A steep climb soon brings us to its entrance, where we pause to explore before retracing our steps back to the fire lookout. From there, the gravel path resumes, crossing the Prinskasteel River once more. At a T-junction, we turn right and then quickly left to join the Amphitheatre Path. This scenic trail descends gently, offering magnificent views of Noordhoek Beach stretching below. At the next intersection, we leave the Amphitheatre Path and follow a gravel road for a few hundred meters until a side trail leads us toward Vanguard Peak (557 m) and Falcon Peak (527 m).
After visiting Vanguard Peak, the route continues toward Baboon Hill (500 m), where we join a footpath that winds back down to the Silvermine River. From here, the trail loops back to the car park at Silvermine Dam, completing a rewarding circular hike of nearly 12 kilometers.
