Hike Details:
- Distance: 13km, circular
- Total elevation gain: +/- 510
- Grade 2B hike
- Duration: approximately 4-5 hours, depending on length of rest breaks.
- Difficulty: Intermediate hike, good fitness required. While certain short sections involve a bit of rock hopping and scrambling, the trail remains safe and enjoyable for hikers of all skill levels

Basic agenda:
We begin our hike at the picnic and braai area near the Meulstroom Botanical Gardens. From here, the trail climbs steeply over rugged, rocky terrain toward Paarl Rock. The path can be indistinct at times, but cairns and painted footprints help guide the way. Just before the summit, enormous granite boulders demand a bit of stretching, squeezing, and boulder-hopping to reach a cave that cuts through the rock itself. Emerging from this cave provides a dramatic exit onto Paarl Rock, where sweeping views of the Berg River Valley and the town of Paarl unfold below. An old cannon stands here too—perfect for memorable group photos. Be cautious not to wander too far south, as the rock drops off sharply with no protective fencing.
From Paarl Rock, we follow a jeep track ascending toward Bretagneklip (644m). A sturdy chain assists hikers in reaching the top, where another breathtaking panorama awaits. After enjoying the view, we carefully retrace our steps to the path below and descend a series of steps through a striking gorge nestled between Gordon Rock and Bretagneklip.
The trail then meanders down through a valley blanketed in fynbos, eventually curving sharply to the right into a tranquil green forest belt. This shaded spot makes an ideal pause for coffee before continuing toward the Bat Cave path. As you enter the picnic area, watch out for deep cavities in the valley floor. The Bat Cave Trail rises gently along a path through a wooded valley, passing magnificent granite boulders—some forming caves and gullies of remarkable beauty. For safety, it’s best to hike this section in a group rather than alone.
Eventually, the jeep track leads us to Christmas Camp, where we stop for lunch. From there, a gravel road guides us back to the familiar steps we descended earlier. After climbing to the top once more, we continue along the jeep track toward the higher entrance of the Meulwater Botanical Garden. This final stretch allows us to wander down through the garden itself, pausing at scenic highlights along the way, before returning to the picnic area where our journey began.
