Assegaaibosch Nature Reserve, Stellenbosch

Nestled on the northeastern slopes of Stellenboschberg, the Assegaaibosch Nature Reserve takes its name from the Assegaaibosch tree, once abundant in the Jonkershoek Valley. Even today, pockets of enchanting woodland remain hidden in the ravines, where the Assegaaiboschkloof and Baviaanskloof Rivers wind their way toward the Eerste River. Both Assegaaibosch and Jonkershoek Nature Reserves have been recognized by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites, celebrated for their outstanding natural beauty and cultural significance.
Beyond its historic woodlands, the reserve offers two circular hiking trails that meander through a wildflower garden, shaded forest patches, and sparkling streams, leading to a viewpoint with breathtaking panoramas of the surrounding peaks—Suurberg, Haelkop, Bothmaskop, Square Tower Peak, and Twins Peak.

Basic agenda:
After paying the entrance fee at the gate, we park and set off along a paved road that soon joins a circular jeep track, climbing gently until we reach a wildflower garden with a pond and inviting lawns. This makes the perfect spot for our first break, with spectacular views toward Bothmaskop and Square Tower Peak.
From here, the trail becomes rougher, following a mountain stream upward to a contour path that leads into Assegaaiboschkloof and over a short hill. At the crest, dramatic vistas open up across the peaks of Jonkershoek Nature Reserve, including Twin Peaks, Virgin Peaks, and Ridge Peaks. A brief descent brings us to a solitary oak tree, before the path winds through a green thicket and climbs steeply once more.
A short level stretch follows, then a steep descent back toward the Eerste River, requiring careful footing over loose gravel. Once at the river, the trail eases into a flat, pleasant path that guides us back to the picnic area—where today’s hike concludes in a tranquil setting.

Distance: 5-6 km, circular trail
Accumulative elevation: 230 meters
Terrain: paved sections with jeeptracks and mountain hiking paths, loose gravel at certain points with splendid views, lawns, picnic areas.
Difficulty: Grade 2B, suitable for any mildly fit hikers.
