Eden Waterfalls Loop, Stellenbosch
Details
Join us for a 13 km hiking adventure in Stellenbosch, where we’ll explore the enchanting Eden Waterfalls Loop. Along the way, we’ll visit the Paradyskloof Waterfall and the Blouklip Waterfall, tucked beneath the majestic Stellenboschberg. This hike blends the magic of waterfalls with the quiet charm of the countryside—making every step worthwhile.
Hike Details:
- Distance: 12-13km, circular
- Total elevation gain: +/- 570
- Grade 2B hike
- Duration: approximately 5-6 hours, depending on length of rest breaks.
- Difficulty: Intermediate hike, good fitness required, mostly accessible paths. Sure footedness required. The paths to both waterfalls are rugged and steep, with loose stones and boulders to navigate. Using hiking sticks is strongly recommended for added stability.
Basic agenda:
After climbing over a triangular stepladder, we enter the Welgevallen Experimental Farm and the fields of Stellenbosch University. The trail leads toward towering blue gum trees, gradually ascending through a shaded plantation. Soon, the Welgevallen Dam comes into view, offering sweeping vistas of the farming village below, framed by the majestic Stellenbosch Mountains.
We make a short detour to the Maties Equestrian Centre before continuing along a beautiful, shaded forest path that crosses a jeep track. The climb becomes steeper on loose gravel until we reach a contour path that branches into two directions: one toward Paradyskloof Waterfall, the other to Blouklip Waterfall. Both require a demanding out-and-back ascent, but reward hikers with spectacular views eastward toward Stellenbosch. After a brief visit to Blouklip Waterfall, we descend into Eden Forest—a lively haven for mountain bikers, joggers, and hikers.
To avoid confusion in this busy area, we remain together as a group.
Within Eden Forest stands a charming free‑standing home known as Huis in die Bos (“House in the Forest”), complete with a lovely balcony that makes the perfect spot for a well‑earned break.
After pausing here, the trail levels out and continues past a water treatment plant, guiding us gently onward towards G-Spot MTB trails above Bothasig. The last stretch follows a farm road, passing the Welgevallen Dam once more before gently leading us back to the car park, where the hike concludes.
