Book Description
In Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality, Eliezer Yudkowsky reimagines Harry as a scientifically minded, hyper-rational thinker who approaches the wizarding world not with wonder—but with curiosity, skepticism, and experimentation.
In this discussion, we’ll explore the first part of the story as a gateway into rational thinking: how beliefs are formed, how biases distort perception, and whether it’s actually possible to think more clearly in everyday life.
Only first part of the book (out of 6) will be discussed.
Discussion Topics
- What does it mean to think “rationally”?
- Curiosity vs. accepting the world as given
- Cognitive biases: how our thinking goes wrong
- Science mindset vs. magical thinking
- Questioning authority and “common sense”
- Can rationality be trained—or is it a personality trait?
- Does being more rational make life better?
