Book Description
Most of us assume that our way of communicating, building trust, giving feedback, or making decisions is simply "normal."
But what if many of the things we take for granted are actually cultural assumptions?
In The Culture Map, Erin Meyer explores how people from different cultures perceive the same situations in surprisingly different ways. What feels honest to one person may seem rude to another. What looks like leadership in one culture may look like arrogance in another.
Although the book was written with international business in mind, its ideas apply far beyond the workplace. They affect friendships, relationships, travel, education, online communities, and everyday interactions with people whose backgrounds differ from our own.
At this event, we'll use the book as a starting point for a broader discussion about culture, communication, and human behavior.
Discussion Topics
- How much of our behavior is shaped by culture?
- Do cultural differences matter more or less than they did in the past?
- Is there such a thing as a "global culture" emerging through the internet?
- Why do people from different backgrounds often misunderstand each other?
- Where is the line between cultural differences and individual personality?
- Are some cultural values better adapted to modern society than others?
