Why does Polish society remain so deeply divided?

In Cham Niezbuntowany, Rafał A. Ziemkiewicz looks for the roots of contemporary Polish conflicts in the country's social and historical structure. He argues that many of today's political divisions cannot be understood without looking at the historical relationship between the Polish elites and the broader population — particularly the legacy of the nobility, the peasantry, and the Polish intelligentsia.

The book presents a controversial interpretation of Polish society, suggesting that historical experiences and inherited social attitudes continue to influence political identities, class perceptions, and conflicts between elites and anti-elites.

Whether or not we agree with Ziemkiewicz's interpretation, it provides an interesting framework for thinking about why political polarization in Poland has such a strong social and cultural dimension.
