Is it easier to imagine the end of the world than the end of capitalism?

In Capitalist Realism: Is There No Alternative?, Mark Fisher examines the feeling that capitalism has become the only realistic way of organizing society. Even when people recognize serious problems within the system, it can be difficult to imagine a fundamentally different alternative.

Fisher explores how capitalist ideas and incentives shape not only economics, but also culture, politics, education, work, mental health, and everyday life. He argues that capitalism can become so deeply embedded in our understanding of reality that alternatives begin to appear impossible or unrealistic.

Written in the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis, the book remains highly relevant in an age of economic insecurity, social media, precarious work, and growing dissatisfaction with existing political institutions.

At this event, we'll use the book as a starting point for a broader discussion about capitalism, ideology, political imagination, and whether a different society is actually possible.
