We had a well attended Meetup on August 3, in spite of the Gen Con and nearby 5K Run/Walk traffic tie-ups Thursday evening. I don't think any of us will ever look at giraffes in the same way after experiencing the cross-country trip of Wild Boy and Wild Girl!

On September 7th we will discuss our first-ever selection by an author who symbolizes more than any other writer of our era the battle currently being waged against naked censorship and the banning of books. Salman Rushdie, who survived a fatwa by Ruhollah Khomeini calling for his death in 1989 over the publishing of The Satanic Verses, on August 12, 2022 paid a steep price for his courage in defense of the human right of self-expression with the loss of one eye and the use of a hand following a vicious attack by a religious fanatic.

The Golden House is a recent work, published in 2017, and is described by the the Associated Press as "[A] modern masterpiece . . . telling a story full of wonder and leaving you marveling at how it ever came out of the author’s head.” Rushdie was named one of the 100 most influential people in the world by Time magazine in April 2023.
Having read The Satanic Verses myself, I can say that you are in for a treat! Rushdie is a supremely talented writer and storyteller.

We hope to see you on September 7th!
