Humor: "The Mostly True Story of Tanner & Louise" by Colleen Oakley 🃏

Details

I know I sent out a vote for humor pick and went off-road (and no, it wasn't an April Fool's trick) except there was a tie between two books, so I cracked them both open to pick one, and meh. I asked a bookstore employee to recommend a humor pick for a book club and since it was mentioned previously, it felt like fate . . .

Tanner needs a place to live. Preferably, one where she can continue to play video games all day. Since she has no money to speak of and her options are limited, she takes the job of working as a live-in caregiver for an elderly woman. Who said being young and broke was fun?

One slip, that’s all it takes Louise's daughter to demand a full-time caretaker. Never mind that she can still walk fine, finish crossword puzzles, and pour the two-finger vodka she drinks every afternoon. Bottom line -- Louise wants a caretaker even less than Tanner wants to be one.

The two start off happily ignoring each other until Tanner starts to notice things. Weird things. Like, why does Louise keep her garden shed locked up so tight? Why is the local news fixated on a mysterious and legendary jewel thief who looks eerily like Louise? And why does Louise suddenly appear in her room, with a packed bag at 1 a.m., insisting that they leave town immediately?

Thus begins the story of two women who—if they can outrun the mistakes of their past—might just have the greatest adventure of their lives.
